Dr. Cynthia Smith, DVM
Veterinarian
Dr. Cindy Smith earned her degree from Washington State University in 1987. She moved to Tacoma and joined The Pet Doctor family in 1989. Her interest in small animal reproductive care began to flourish, which prompted her to begin practicing Small Animal Reproductive Medicine exclusively in 1993.
There are no typical days at the office for Dr. Smith. Her appointments on any given day could range from an Infertility Workup, to a Transcervical Insemination, to a Caesarian Section. Dr. Smith frequently makes herself available outside of her scheduled office hours for emergency procedures as well for her established cases.
Dr. Smith is a Member of the Society for Theriogenology (since 2000) and a regular attendee to educational conferences on the topic of canine reproduction.
Dr. Smith has extensive personal experience with canine breeding and showing, which allows her to relate on a personal level with her clients. She bred and showed Maltese dogs for 25 years. She also competed in obedience as well as conformation and once put a Utility Dog Degree (U.D.) on her Shih Tzu!
While her days of breeding and showing Maltese dogs are behind her, she has found a new passion in showing Polish and Araucana Bantam Chickens—no handlers, no politics, no c-sections!
Dr. Smith has spent much of her free time as “Vet on Grounds” for fairs and dog shows and volunteering for 4H. She has frequently been an invited speaker for dog clubs, has published articles on both dogs and chickens, made a cameo appearance in CMT’s The Chicken People, and has also made music videos about artificial insemination.
